Here are some works of art created using gouache on wood.

What is my process working on smaller projects?
I often will work from photos, but I typically start out with small thumbnail sketches for my paintings. I like to draw simple line sketches where I work out the dimensions of the painting and I may even use a graphing process to transfer an sketch onto a larger piece of wood or canvas.
What is my favorite medium
I prefer working with gouache on wood for it allows for many types of modifications. I can add pieces of wood, sand the wood, use different types of wood and I don’t seal the wood with a gesso wash. I prefer to paint directly on the wood and use the color of the wood for my ground.
What is the typical size of my art work?
I prefer to work on small managable wood blocks or panels. When I first started experimenting with painting on wood, I was drawing inspiration from the Retablo makers of Northern New Mexico. I have joined panels of wood to make paintings as large as six feet wide, and I have created murals with the largest one being 27 feet long by 8 feet tall. It is on the NMSU Grants Campus in a resource room for writing. I have also painted a movable mural on panels with students. That painting is a collection of different witdth panels that add up to about 20 feet of a panoramic view of Grants New Mexico.
What are my other creative endeavors?
I like to build things out of wood. My secondary area in graduate school was sculpture and I primarily worked with wood. Since 2007 I have created small parade floats for the Desfile de Niños in Santa Fe, and I have combined my wood working skills to build the frames of the quite fanciful parade floats made with card board and mixed media.
