Hello, my name is Alfred Gene Romero and I am a Professor of Humanities in Art and Writing for NMSU Grants. I am coming into my 18th year of teaching for NMSU Grants and it has been a pleasure to work in this culturally rich part of New Mexico. I am originally from Santa Fe, NM and I graduated from Santa Fe High, but I spent many years in the Midwest attaining my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I have a Bachelors of Art from Carleton College in Northfield, MN and a Master of Arts and Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. While at the University of Iowa, I also attained a Teacher’s Certification in K-12 Art Education. I have worked with students of all ages and diverse backgrounds. I enjoy sharing my own cultural experiences and knowledge of Mexico, New Mexico, Spain and France. As an artist my work is influenced by his many trips to my mother’s hometown in Jalisco, Mexico. I paint primarily with gouache on wood inspired by the work of the traditional Hispanic Arts of New Mexico, such as retablos and bultos. I have also reproduced work by famous Mexican artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, in mural form for a couple of restaurants in Iowa. A few years back I worked with my students from a Drawing I class to create a mural in the Writing Center Room in Martinez Hall of NMSU Grants. And prior to that, I worked with a Painting I class to create a panoramic painting of Mount Taylor and Grants on a wood panel that is in the main hallway of McClure Hall just down from my office. Lastly, I have created mini parade floats for the Santa Fe Pet Parade since 2007. These mini floats have become more elaborate as the years have gone by and they have become a tradition in my family as we continue to celebrate our pets and children in the Fiestas de Santa Fe.
